Trumpeter Swans Wildlife – Nine Cygnets Minnesota Wetland Waterfowl
A pair of Trumpeter Swans glide across calm prairie water, followed by nine young cygnets swimming in a loose line behind them through the quiet wetlands.
I often walk the trails at this prairie wetland restoration site with my family. On this particular evening, we noticed a pair of Trumpeter Swans resting in a small pond at the bottom of the hill. I had my camera, but wondered if they would still be there by the time we made it down to the water.
When I stepped onto the floating dock, I was surprised to find them still there. The sunlight was perfectly positioned over the water, and the swans seemed to line up naturally across the pond just as I was ready to take the photograph.
Only later did I realize how fortunate we were to witness this moment. Trumpeter Swans can lay clutches as large as nine eggs, but most pairs typically raise only four to six cygnets in a season. Seeing a family with nine young birds traveling together is a rare and memorable sight.
The species itself was once nearly lost. In the 1930s, fewer than 70 Trumpeter Swans were known to remain in North America. Through conservation efforts and wetland restoration projects, their numbers have slowly recovered. Protected prairie wetlands (like the one at Wolf Lake in southwestern Minnesota) now provide important habitat where these swans can once again raise their young.
