Prairie River Reflections -Southwestern Minnesota

We spent part of the evening at Mound Creek, known for its red Sioux quartzite rock and a small waterfall tucked into the rural countryside. From there we got back in the car to explore the gravel roads just north of there, looking for whatever the light had left to offer.

We pulled over when a barn propped on a hillside caught our eye. After photographing the barn I turned around and was surprised by the creek winding through the pasture behind me – that photograph became the Prairie Creek Reflections print. I completely missed it at first because I was so focused on the barn. Golden light was shining through the trees onto the grass, creating dramatic shadows across the pasture. The calm water reflected the blue sky above, and cattle grazed quietly in the distance.

But then I turned around one more time, realizing the golden light was pointing directly at the other side of the road. And there it was…

The water was completely still, reflecting the trees and the late evening sky like a mirror. Three completely different photographs from the same location on the same evening, just by turning around. Sometimes the light just lines everything up for you.
