Wolf Lake Summer Reflections – Wetlands Conservation Area
Wolf Lake is one of those places that looks different every time you visit. Paved trails wind through the prairie grass, down to a floating dock on the lake, and up to the overlook where this photograph was taken. On this particular summer day the water had filled to its fullest, wide and open across the entire wetland basin.
What drew me to this particular moment was the color. Bright green duckweed covers part of the surface, breaking up the open water into patches of vivid green and deep blue sky reflection. Native grasses and shrubs frame the foreground, and a mature oak on the left edge pulls the whole scene together. Rolling green hills stretch across the background beneath a sky full of summer clouds.
This federal wetlands conservation site is a hidden gem in Cottonwood County. On this particular day the water was so still it perfectly mirrored the passing summer clouds. It’s a scene that reminds me of the importance of these protected waters – not just for the wildlife that calls them home, but for the sense of peace they offer to the rest of us. This photo is for anyone who has ever stopped by a roadside wetland just to take a deep breath and look at the sky.
