Swayback Bridge – Ramsey Park, Redwood Falls Minnesota Print

The Swayback Bridge at Ramsey Park has stood over the Redwood River since 1938. Built with Redwood granite and reinforced concrete, it carries County Road 31 across the river and is listed on the national register of historic places – one of the few remaining examples of its distinctive swayback arch design.

What makes this bridge unusual isn’t just its age or its construction. The low granite railings were designed to let water and debris flow over the top during flooding.

I photographed it on an autumn day when the trees along the river were just beginning to turn – the rocky riverbed exposed, the leaves holding their last green before the season changed.
