Hoary Vervain Spires – Minnesota Prairie Wildflower Print
Purple against green against blue – it’s hard to imagine a better color combination, and the prairie delivers it naturally every summer. These Hoary Vervain spires were growing along the trail at Wolf Lake, tall and upright, reaching toward a sky full of summer clouds. The hillside behind them and the open blue sky above give this image a different feel from the other wildflower prints – wider, more open, more like a landscape.
Hoary Vervain is a native prairie wildflower found throughout the Great Plains, blooming midsummer along roadsides, hillsides, and wetland edges. Another one of those quiet surprises you find when you take the time to walk slowly and look closely.
About This Location
This photograph was captured along the trails at Wolf Lake in the Windom wetland conservation area, rural Cottonwood County, southwestern Minnesota – a federally protected prairie wetland where native wildflowers, tallgrass prairie, and open water come together along a network of paved walking trails.
